Mozambique, previously a Portuguese colony, gained its independence in 1975. It is a country of contrasts that has preserved its African cultural heritage. Its eastern coastline along the Indian Ocean is more than 1 000 km long. Warm weather and pristine beaches have made this country a traveller’s paradise for beach lovers, sailors and scuba divers.
Gorongosa is perhaps Africa’s greatest wildlife restoration project and a success story of conservation, community (farming, education, health), science and sustainable tourism. The park lost 90% of its wildlife during the civil war, but the damage has been restored through the work of the Carr Foundation. With now more than 100.000 large mammals, up from a few remnant populations that survived the war, they share the park with over 6.300 other species of animals and plants that have been recorded so far. Today, Gorongosa is one of the world’s most bio-diverse places and offers dramatic geological features and spectacular settings.

Hidden treasure of the world
Around 20 km from Vilanculos lies a string of five magnificent tropical islands forming the Bazaruto Archipelago, a national park created in 1971 and nicknamed “the jewels in the crown”. This natural ecosystem is unique because of its isolation: forest, savannah, lakes, ponds and marshes. As far as the eye can see, it’s all white sand and turquoise water, dotted here and there with coconut palms and impressive high sand dunes.
The underwater world is incredible: dolphins, turtles, humpback whales and manatees are regularly spotted. Bazaruto is also home to the last population of dugongs on the African coast. Small duiker antelopes, suni, squirrels, samango monkeys, reptiles, galagos, bushbucks and pink flamingos live together in this Eden.
If you’re a lover of nature and splendour, you’re in for a treat…
